The AFL community is mourning the devastating loss of former West Coast Eagles premiership player Adam Selwood, who has passed away at the age of 41.
Selwood played 187 games for West Coast between 2002 and 2013 and was a pivotal part of the club’s legendary 2006 premiership-winning side. Known for his grit, toughness, and selfless team play, Selwood was a respected figure both on and off the field.
π A Double Tragedy for the Selwood Family
Adam’s untimely passing comes just months after the heartbreaking death of his twin brother, former Brisbane Lions player Troy Selwood, who died by suicide in February.
The Selwood family is one of the most well-known in Australian football, with Adam, Troy, Joel, and Scott Selwood all having played at the highest level. In February, Adam, Joel, and Scott stood side by side to farewell their brother Troy in an emotional service at Kardinia Park — a moment many called their most courageous performance yet.
Today, they face yet another tragedy.
"We are heartbroken by the passing of Adam earlier today. Words cannot express the grief and sadness we feel," the Selwood family shared in a public statement.
"Adam was a loving husband, and an incredible father to Lenny and Billie. We are devastated to lose such a wonderful husband, father, son, and brother."
π A Legacy Beyond Football
Born in Bendigo, Victoria, Adam moved to Western Australia as a teenager and soon became a household name among West Coast fans. A fearless competitor, Selwood was widely respected for his leadership and work ethic, and his contribution to the 2006 premiership remains etched in Eagles history.
After hanging up his boots in 2013, Selwood continued his commitment to the game, taking on off-field roles including development coach and later head of female football at West Coast.
Last month, Adam took part in the HBF Run for a Reason in Perth, raising funds for suicide prevention—an effort that now carries an even deeper meaning.
